Chapter Overview
The respiratory system of man is specialized to facilitate the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the body cells and the environment. Efficient gaseous exchange is supported by respiratory surfaces that are thin, moist, highly vascularized, and have a large surface area. In humans, the respiratory tract is divided into the upper respiratory tract (nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx) and the lower respiratory tract (trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, and alveoli).
Ventilation, or breathing, is the mechanical process that moves air into and out of the lungs through inspiration and expiration, driven by pressure differences created by the diaphragm and intercostal muscles. Once in the lungs, oxygen binds with haemoglobin for transport in the blood, while carbon dioxide is transported as bicarbonate ions, carbaminohemoglobin, and dissolved gas in plasma. Respiratory pigments like haemoglobin and myoglobin play a vital role in storing and releasing oxygen.
The chapter also addresses common respiratory disorders. These include upper respiratory tract infections such as sinusitis and otitis media, lower respiratory tract infections like pneumonia and tuberculosis, and chronic lung conditions such as emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
